Career Advice Q & A with Mark Glasser
Expert answers to your questions, with new updates weekly.

Q. I recently lost my job and am now looking for a new one. I am having a difficult time adjusting to the slow pace of a job search campaign compared to the 50-60 hours per week I was working. Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this?
P.M., Connecticut

A. Not knowing exactly what you mean by a slow pace, let me offer these thoughts. If you just recently lost your job, you should be involved in a very large amount of work in your job search campaign. Getting proper marketing materials ready including a resume, cover letters, and a marketing plan is very time consuming. As you begin to market yourself to companies and recruiters, network with people you know, and respond to advertised openings, that can also consume a great deal of time.

If you are not spending 40 hours per week at this stage of your search, then you need to rethink your approach. Finally, accept the fact that a job search is different than the work you were doing and learn as much as you can. Take time to exercise and do other things you could not do, while working 60 hours a week.
